Healing After Trauma: Have You Given Yourself Permission to Heal?

Survival teaches you how to keep moving. You learn how to show up, take care of everyone else, handle responsibilities, and keep going even when parts of you are still hurting.

But surviving and healing are not always the same thing.

Sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying what happened to us that we don't realize we're still allowing it to speak for us. The rejection. The grief. The disappointment. The trauma. The choices we wish we could change. We survived it—but somewhere along the way, we began measuring who we are by what we've been through.

Healing asks a different question:

What if what happened to you is part of your story, but no longer has permission to define you?

Faith doesn't require us to pretend the pain never happened. Healing doesn't erase the past. It changes the authority we give the past over our present and our future.

There comes a point when survival has done its job. You made it through. Now you have permission to live beyond it—to rediscover your worth, reclaim your voice, strengthen your faith, and make room for the person you are becoming.

That message is at the heart of my memoir, Eyes Wide Shut, Wandering Awake: I'm Not Picture Perfect, But I'm Still Worth The Picture. I wrote from places that weren't always comfortable to revisit, not simply to tell what happened, but to show that our hardest chapters do not have to become our final chapters.

You don't have to have everything figured out. You don't have to be picture perfect. And healing doesn't have to look like anyone else's journey.

Your past is part of your story. It does not have to determine your future.

Permission to heal starts now.
